That is the way you proceed. If you play any instrument, your ear is able to comprehend music better if the same instrument is involved. As you practice more, you will start recognizing other instruments as well.

you have to train and know the tune. like you could write it down then you could add harmony to the melody. then you could add the accompaniment to the melody. I dunno, that's how i do it. :)

It's probably a good idea to start with a rented violin and bow to be sure it's something you really want to do (the place renting it to you should be able to help you with finding the best size). If after a couple months of playing you decide you really like it and want to continue then buy a reasonably priced one from a local music store or violin shop. Don't get a really expensive one yet...wait till you've been playing a few years.

First place to start would be to find a music instructor. Make sure it's someone you're comfortable with. There's nothing worse than a bad instructor to ruin your love for music. The instructor will tell you some things you'll need but basically they'll be rosin, a shoulder rest, soft cloth (to wipe the rosin off the strings), and extra strings to keep on hand...just in case.

Hope this helps.

GO TO THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC (NOT YOU LOCAL MUSIC STORE) OF THE NEAREST UNIVERSITY FROM YOU AND SEE IF THEY HAVE A COMMUNITY MUSIC PROGRAM FOR ADULTS. THE INSTRUCTORS AT A UNIVERSITY USUALLY ARE MUCH MORE QUALIFIED THAN TEACHERS AT MUSIC STORES WHO TEACH TEN INSTRUMENTS AND DON'T REALLY KNOW ANY OF IT.

Firstly, consult with a professional violinist. This person can be a symphony performer, solo performer or a teacher. That person will reccomend a violin with which to begin. They may also have connections to help you gain access to an inexpensive used violin or let you borrow one of their old ones free of cost. You never know! Then take lessons. You can find teachers in the phone book, phone book listing web sites and at local music stores.

A good bow is a necessity. The bow is what creates the friction to create the sound. The strings vibrate and then resonate in the body of the violin. Therefore, without good quality horsehair and wood on your bow, the sound will not be as pleasant.

There are accessories you will need for practice as well: a metronome to keep tempo, a tuner to keep the instrument in tune, a beginner's violin book, a beginner's theory book (if you don't know how to read music yet) and rosin (to wax your strings). Hopefully your teacher can help you find any other necessities.

If you cannot read music yet, it would help to take theory lessons.

Again, this will also depend on the level of commitment you have to playing. Good luck!
